Headline: Is Delegation a Dirty Word for You?
This week the accountability call I lead Monday through Friday (Think about that a minute – daily accountability? How might that help you?) is focused on delegation and it’s been an interesting discussion.
Many leaders, bosses, people who get stuff done, are so focused on the “Getting it Done” that they neglect to use delegation to their best advantage. Is that you?
Here’s a couple of ways to let go of the reins and get more done by giving more away –
Shift your mindset.
When things come at us, hit our desk, move into our inbox or text, the first thing most leaders think is, “Take care of this.” And then go about taking care of it. But is that a good use of your time? – Here’s a new way to think from Daniel L. Doctoroff who states, “I either delegate something, I dump it, or I deal with it.”
The steps which are counter-intuitive are:
So then, no matter what comes to your desk, inbox or phone, is asking this question of yourself –
“Who could do this instead of me?”
Note that the question wasn’t – “Better than me” nor “Faster than me” – both of which matters not. It’s who can do this INSTEAD of me?
If you decide that it’s still you – then and maybe this should be first – can you dump this task completely?
The question then becomes: Does this NEED to be done? Or “What benefit is there from doing this?” These questions can free up your mind space and allow you to focus on something of a higher priority, or settle the issue of IF this should be done.
Lastly in this quote is the actual DOING part of it. DEAL with whatever it is.
The definition of ‘DO’
perform (an action, the precise nature of which is often unspecified).
The definition of ‘DEAL’
an agreement entered into by two or more parties for their mutual benefit, especially in a business or political context.
Doesn’t the second one sound more beneficial? And sometimes doing the action is the quickest, easiest thing to do IF you have asked the first questions.
You rarely have to do everything yourself, however, if you don’t ask yourself some or all of these questions, it’s likely you will end up doing much more than is reasonable.
