Weekly – Do you have the right intention for a live event?

As you read this I’m in Orlando, Florida for the Global Pet Expo – put on by the American Pet Products Association and it’s a big deal for sure, especially for those manufacturers and suppliers to the professionals that provide products for pet lovers.

I have a very clear intent.

This is imperative for anyone who wants to get the most out of anything.

The word intention means: A thing intended, an aim or plan

My plan is to interview leaders about why loving a pet makes you a better leader. It’s also to see and support our Women in the Pet Industry Network members and talk about why being in the spring issue of Top Women in the Pet Industry Magazine is a savvy and smart idea.

I have goals for how many leaders I want and am interviewing. We’ve made a list of members to connect with and have a meet up planned. There are events to attend and learn from. We’ve created a schedule and matrix for our goals.

And – most people are less than clear about why they attend or exhibit at an event.

The reason I know this is from the plethora of press releases and invitations to visit booths with no apparent benefit except to be told about their product.

So, though it’s too late to come up with a clear intention for this expo, (though setting goals for your day is the start) I would challenge you to think about any and all events you attend. And plan what you want that is realistic and leading to your overall goal, whatever that goal is.

If you do the intention work – coming up with your aim, your plan then there is no doubt you will have a much more successful time.

Would love to hear how you set your intention for events. Please share!

AND – look for some of the interviews I’m doing in upcoming weeklies!

If you would like help becoming aware and reaching higher levels of results – set up a complimentary success clarifying call with me.

Weekly – Everyone Says They Are…

Of Course I Listen!

“You never listen!” is a phrase you may have had someone say to you, or more likely, you’ve said to someone.

We want people to listen to us. We want to be heard, seen, understood. And yet, and yet – it doesn’t happen all that often. And maybe, usually, it’s because we want what we want – and rarely focus on what the other person wants.

And that is the secret of success.

To listen to people.

And here is the rub – we mostly would love to be listened to. If we are honest, if we are clear and true. We would love to be listened to, to be admired, to matter what else is happening – please listen to me!

So how to use this?

Stop selling – begin listening – and gently asking – and then listening to the answers and letting the other person know you are listening.

This will help you in two ways:

  1. People will respond and when they do, they will buy more.
  2. You will learn something – and if you are really listening, you may learn a lot! Which you can use to your advantage and serve your customers even more.

And for our incessant goal of being listened to?

When someone does – praise them lavishly. “Thank you for being a great listener!” – Or – “You are a wonderful listener! Thank you!”

And then, they will keep listening and all things will be wonderful!

Listen up! Be a good listener and see what happens to your bottom line!

If you would like help becoming aware and reaching higher levels of results – set up a complimentary success clarifying call with me.

Weekly – Are you looking or seeing?

What is the point of having a good view?

I live on a hill. It looks out over a small valley that holds many trees, brush, blackberry bushes that creep and a winding gravel road that leads to the barn and onto the main road that takes me into town.

I also have large picture windows that are really pieces of art since the view through them changes into the most gorgeous landscapes each season.  I would like to say I spend time really looking out the windows – and yet – Though I glance out of them often, do I really see what is there? Does this happen in your life or business too?

So, how do we shift from looking and start seeing? And what do we want to see?

Most of this is about, of course, what we are focused on. When someone comes into our business are we looking at them only rather than seeing them?

What does it take to see?

  1. Deepness – looking deeper than the surface. To note the subtle things that at first glance you might miss. And that will help you notice and then comment or compliment on.
  2. Finding the good, the positive, the little things that would make your client feel special. The light in their eyes, the smile they display and the questions they ask.
  3. Noting what is off. From a frown, or signs of tiredness or even someone down in the shoulders. These are signs that a sweet word from you may make all the difference to their day.

One of the gifts of writing this weekly is how it helps me (as I seek to help you) to do what I am   – so that I will look as usual and also I will seek to really see.

How about you?

Weekly – One of the Most Demanding Traits of a Leader

Are You Consistent As a Leader?

One of my team and I had a little misunderstanding. When we stopped to talk about it she said to me, “You are inconsistent sometimes.”

She is right. I am inconsistent sometimes.

I could probably say that I am consistently inconsistent but I think that would probably be some sort of grammatical inconsistency! Ha!

How can we become more consistent?

In my search about the traits most beneficial to a leader – consistency is one that is sought muchly and attained rarely. – And I think the reason is that we are such interesting beings, us humans.

In attempting to understand and decide how to become more consistent in my leadership, I am studying the leaders I most admire and one quote I uncovered and like is from Lincoln Chafee who said, “Trust is built with consistency.”

So that’s my call to action – to work on becoming more and more consistent! And I trust by having this goal I can attain it. What do you think?

Weekly – Do You Have The Right Habits Of Mind?

Where is your mind leading you?

In my quest to make sure my clients have the most cutting edge information around anything that can improve their leadership performance, we talk a lot about habits, routines, thinking, self-examination, and more and more –

This week we embark on the nifty work of Arthur L. Costa and Bena Kallick called Habits of Mind: A Developmental Series.

Why even think about developing some habits of mind – especially 16 of them? (There are 16 of them!) Because those that get better are the ones who get better results! Stands to reason right?

Instead of giving you all sixteen – here’s the link for you to uncover them yourself –

https://www.chsvt.org/wdp/Habits_of_Mind.pdf

And here’s the point of bringing it up:

What are you doing to develop YOUR habits of mind?

This list might be a good place to start!

Weekly – Are You Ready to Revitalize Your Routine?

Six Weeks into the Year – Are You Missing the Magic?

The rabbit hole I sometimes find myself in usually starts with research. It might be the quote I’m going to use, who said this and what did they do or contribute? It can also be a headline or storyline that sucks me into reading more. Usually, I gain insight, learn something new, or think a new thought, all of which make my life more wonderful and that’s my goal for you too.

How are you making your life more wonderful?

A rabbit hole I found myself in while researching quotes about routines led me to an author/minister/televangelist I was unfamiliar with. A man named Mike Murdock who said, “The secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.”

Is this true? And if so, what is the secret? How can it be hidden?

This led me to a book he wrote called, The Law of Recognition – in which he makes a case that what we seek may very well be right in front of us, in our lives, a part of our world now, however, we don’t recognize it.

Think about that for a moment – what if – the life you want is already here, only you’re missing it’s magic? The relationships you long for, are in your life just hidden from you by anger or fear or history? The joy you seek is simply a matter of becoming aware of the warm muzzle that seeks your hand, the friend on the phone, or the book on your shelf?

You are the one to determine these things however my job is to challenge you to think about things in new ways. What if, your future success really is inside your daily routine? How might you look at that routine differently or tweak it?

I would love to know how you go about it – I’m only a click away! Shawna@ShawnaSchuh.com

Weekly – What Color Are Your Thoughts?

Ready to do some colouring?

It’s February and there’s a lot of white around the nation. Skies are grey, the trees are bare and sometimes this affects our mood – my mood less since I paint my days in colour.

My mom used to say that it wasn’t smart to walk around with rose-coloured glasses on which I am now realizing isn’t completely true. Especially since I ran across this quote from Marcus Aurelius…

“Your mind will be like its habitual thoughts; for the soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.”

Mostly I read about how to think positive, or think possibilities and I do and agree, but what about colour? What about using this simple visual tool to see your day differently, your environment and the people around you?

What would it feel like to bath someone you are gazing at in a soft amber glow? What if you looked at every paper you touched today with the colour of its importance rather than a stack of get-to-when-I can papers?

Recently I learned the importance of light when dealing with so much screen time and an associate showed me how to set my phone and computer up so that my screens change during different times of the day – more sunrise and sunset colours so that my body and eyes are not fatigued with the blue screen.

The point is that a change in colour and light can alter and improve your health.

So why not extend that to everything you see today?

Put a little colour on some normal or mundane things and see who life gets richer, better and more brilliant!

Oh – and change your screen colours – it’s cool and will help your health!

Weekly – Mastery of The Top Thing is Tops!

Are You a Master of Self Mastery?

This whole month our focus has been on internal work – from self-awareness belief commitment and now self-mastery – my themes revolve around that internal compass.

Note: Research from British biologist Robin Baker has actually confirmed humans have some internal sense of direction – so how does that apply to self-mastery?

It means that seeking to know yourself, understand yourself and what motivates you, fuels you and also what causes you to get off track are within your power to determine.

Is that the best news you’ve ever heard?

Okay – the caveat is that it’s a journey and can take a lifetime but hey, what else are we doing, right?

So here’s my weekly question for you: What are you doing to know yourself?

Here are a couple of helpful actions you can take:

Be silent – let your thoughts lead you places they haven’t

Meditate – stop your thoughts and see what happens from that

Ask deep questions – and ones that lead to answers – (more on that in another post)

This year I am asking better questions – spending more time in silence and will continue to practice meditation (though this is a new ability I am not well established in yet!)

Let me know how you are seeking self-mastery. I love to learn from you!

Weekly – Fear for the New Year?

What Holds You Back?

We’re in the third week of 2019 already – how are you doing with your goals? Any trepidation? Any huge successes so far?

Today my gift for you is this quote:

The loose definition of fear is:  an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or a threat

In business, one fear is not being able to earn more than you spend, or how you will keep or manage those you bring on or have a catastrophe which would derail you. Note, these are worries that sometimes keep people up at night.

Are they also fear? They fit the unpleasant emotion part – and they fall easily into the belief part. There is an old adage (I think from the Bible) that what we fear will befall us.

So where does commitment come in? According to Sammy Davis Jr. – the other choice is commitment.  Do you agree?

For me, when I am committed (at all costs) to make something happen, get something written (hello this post) or to deliver on what I promise, it feels like a movement, like action, like motion and usually, there is no fear.

The reason I am taking action, doing the movement, writing the words is that I committed to doing it even if I’m afraid (unpleasant emotion-  Danger to my reputation) I do it despite those feelings.

So I’m on the side of Sammy here – and I freely admit that there are a few other emotions, choices I dance around with, however, when I commit – especially to a client or you my reader taking action is far easier.

How do you use commitment?

I would love to hear your thoughts! You can email me at Shawna@ShawnaSchuh.com

Weekly – Do You Have Unbelievable Beliefs?

How Might Your Beliefs Benefit You More?

This quote startled me:

“A belief is only a thought I keep thinking.”  ~Abraham Hicks

Really? It’s what I’m THINKING rather than what is true or what is written in a book, or what my parents insisted?

Right now you may be thinking, “That’s not right, there are things that are true and things that aren’t true!”

And then we go down the slippery slopes we’re living in with people born one gender and identifying as another – what’s true there? Is it the body or the mind?

So let’s review this notion that I found so startling and which I think has merit.

A belief is only a thought I keep thinking –

This begs the question – What am I thinking?

And even more important to ask:

Is what I’m thinking helping me?

Is what I’m letting into my mind of benefit or detriment?

These two questions can make a drastic difference in your life, your results and potentially your happiness.

Today, take a look into your mind and think about your beliefs – and if they are only thoughts we keep thinking – are you thinking well?

Because you can change your thoughts you know!
